Karen Ries, founder of HANA Organics Skincare, is inspired by the power of plants to create great skin products suitable for everyone. She is applying her knowledge of herbalism to build a business that nourishes people and planet, providing us all with the nutrients our skin need to glow! With the support of Natalie Berry, the two entrepreneurs collaborated to create this beautiful line of products.
What inspired you to study herbalism?
I started studying herbalism several years ago, because I was interested in the medicinal properties of plants, and making medicines for my family. During my course studies, we were required to make skincare products. Right away I could see and feel the difference. They felt so good on my skin, and the eczema I had suffered from for years disappeared and never came back. All it took was eliminating the harsh chemicals, perfumes, and other toxic and unnecessary ingredients, and making sure that the ingredients we did use were pure, organic and as close to their natural state as possible. Each product we make at HANA Organic Skincare follows these same simple guidelines.
What teaching have you received from working with the plants?
Plants can teach us a lot about self care. If we give our plants and herbs sun, water, and good, nutritious soil, they will not only survive - but thrive. It’s pretty simple, really.
If you give them what they need, mother nature will take over from there. We can apply the same teaching to our skin. If our skin is given nourishing, healthy ingredients, it will thrive as well.
At HANA Organic Skincare, our product ingredient list is kept small and simple, and we use only the most pure and organic ingredients we can find. If you give your skin what it need, mother nature will help out there as well.
What inspired you to start making skincare products?
I have always had sensitive, trouble-prone skin: adult acne in my 20’s, then eczema whenever I tried a new product. A few years ago I was working towards my herbalist certification, and one of the course requirements was to make our own skincare products. These products had no harmful chemicals or preservatives. The minute I started using them, the eczema disappeared. I’ve been a true believer ever since
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as female entrepreneurs?
Nothing too specific as a female, but a lot of the regular aches and pains of a start-up.
What kind of woman do you manufacture Hana for? What are the qualities you think she embodies?
Many of the women who purchase our products are environmentally and socially conscious, and are aware of what they put on their skin. Others are learning about the organic lifestyle and are in search of products that are less harsh and kinder to their skin. Our aim is to handcraft skincare products that work for every woman.Check out HANA Organics on Orange Harp
