It’s Fashion Week in New York City! What are your runway-ready beauty essentials?
New York Fashion Week is always a fun time to see what’s happening with fashion and beauty trends, as well as work with lots of talented artists and stylists. Usually the shows are sponsored by a specific makeup line, so they provide the color products (for eyes, cheeks and lips) needed to create the look of the show. That said, makeup artists are expected to bring the basics- foundation, skincare and tools.
Backstage, models are used to seeing specific products in artists kits, most of which are full of parabens, fragrance and petrochemicals. Sometimes they even request these products, as they seem to work well and they are simply unaware of their potential damage. The models skin is subject to so much, especially during this week- countless makeup applications and removals, all using chemical-laden cosmetics.
Since my makeup kit contains only healthy, plant-based alternatives, it’s always fun for me to introduce the models to these new options. They are great staples for any beauty kit and I’m thrilled to share them with you too- enjoy!
This lightweight, yet super-moisturizing face cream is the perfect pick for creating glowing, runway-ready skin. It contains a special “Tri-Rescue Skin Complex”, a blend of tumeric, alpa-bisabolol and reishi mushroom, which helps soothe redness and repair damaged skin. It makes even the most tired skin look youthful and fresh, which is the foundation to creating a gorgeous makeup look.
A simple, yet brilliant creation, Waxelene is your petroleum-free substitute for Vaseline or that ubiquitous Papaw ointment (found in countless makeup artist kits). Instead, it is made with nourishing ingredients such as beeswax, rosemary oil and vitamin E. The tube packaging makes it easy to squeeze out only what you need and keeps it sanitary for multiple applications. My go-to for lip prep.
It’s always convenient to have one type of product that can be worn as both a foundation and concealer. The Ultimate Concealer works well for this purpose, as it has a creamy texture that allows for smooth application. If you would like to use it as foundation, just apply a small amount to clean, moisturized skin and blend well. To conceal blemishes and under eyes, lightly stipple a small amount to the area until you reach the desired level of coverage.
W3ll People Bio Brightener Powder
As a makeup artist and New Yorker, I’m always looking for ways to pare down my kit (they get so heavy to tote all over the city!) So I am thrilled to have just one powder that I can use to set foundation and minimize shine on many different skin tones. Made with finely milled, translucent minerals, the Bio Brightener helps absorb excess oils while keeping the skin’s natural glow.
Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Towelettes
When you need to remove a face of makeup in minutes, which happens often backstage at Fashion Week, wipes are your best friend! But many of them are loaded with parabens and fragrance and either irritate and/or leave a residue on the skin. I was happy to find that Burt’s Bees wipes have healthier ingredients and leave the skin feeling cleaner than most. The Sensitive formula is gentle and effective, which is always appreciated when removing makeup.
