Every Sunday in Spain it amazes me and warms my heart to see families and friends gather inside or out, enjoying each other’s company, and actually sitting down to have a meal together. This week I share my experience of the European notion “Switch off Sundays” and how this S.O.S. has been life-changing for me, my family and can be for you too. “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a... The paradox of life coaching is that your coach needs coaching just as much as you do. I learned that a few weeks ago when I took part in Handel Group’s Design Your Life Weekend. It wasn’t something that was expressly stated, rather it was embodied by our head coach Laurie Gerber. She made it perfectly clear that she is an imperfect being and indirectly invited us to accept our own imperfections by being so unapologetically Laurie. There is so much to say about what I learned and how I felt in my 2 day foray into The Handel Method,... Get the full story
A couple of years ago the concept of going on a juice cleanse still occurred to me as unnecessary and silly. I didn’t see the point in depriving myself of delicious food and shocking my body just to look slim for a couple of days and then to put on the weight just as quickly again. It wasn’t until my friend persuaded me to do join her on a juice cleanse for moral support that I came to realize that I was wrong all along. I agreed to do it to as I thought it wouldn’t hurt to give my... Get the full story
We are a sleep deprived species. In the UK the prevalence of insomnia is 37%, according to a study published recently. But insomnia and sleep deprivation not only result in the obvious tiredness and irritability; it’s also linked with increased rates of depression, anxiety and even pain. My hypnotherapy practise is full of women with this problem. But what is at the root of all this sleeplessness? Issues I see coming up time and again are of stress, a need to try to be ‘perfect’, an inability to switch off and make time to relax, excessive pressure and worry. Does... Get the full story
This season was pretty awful when it comes to allergies, especially in New York, an unsuspecting danger zone, considering its relatively little greenery. I got lucky — I started taking daily doses of two OTC medications due to an entirely separate allergic reaction before allergy season commenced, so I was inadvertently protected. After a while, though, I noticed I was sneezing, experiencing itchy eyes, and sniffling like the rest of NYC’s humanity. Had the meds worn off? Since I generally prefer to avoid taking any kind of medication, and the medication I was taking was apparently ineffective anyway, I sought out... Get the full story
Today, I want you to take a moment to think about how you’re living your life. Do you spend more time escaping from your life or creating it? Do you always come up with reasons why it’s not the right time to go after certain opportunities? Do most of your actions remove you from the present moment because of how unhappy you are? Maybe it’s getting lost in TV shows, movies, vacations, food, alcohol, daydreaming, making excuses for why you can’t do all the things you want to be doing… Or do you spend more of your time taking action,... Raise your hand if you have more things you need to do than the capacity to even remember them all. Now raise your hand if you’ve ever felt so overwhelmed it made you sad, because you really want to do everything, and you want to do it well, but there isn’t enough time. You are not alone. I think you have a case of what I like to call “being a woman.” The defining characteristic is not the emotional reaction—although there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, the adjective is used as an insult when it’s the farthest thing from... As a mom of a small child and with limited time, what kind of 5-minute beauty routine would you recommend? I’d love to look polished and have a punch of color now and then, without the time commitment and having to dig through too many products. This is a question I get from so many of my makeup clients—we are all very busy women and want to look polished in a pinch! You actually don’t need a lot of time, or products, to go from barefaced to beautified. A few minutes in the mirror with the right tools can make... Get the full story
I write about all sorts of things that come up in my coaching—love, relationships, time management, character traits… but today I want to I want address a subject that is possibly THE most important concern (or should be) for me, my family, my clients and community: Health. The state of your body during your time on the planet. How you look and feel every single day. Recently I attended the book release of a dear friend and colleague of mine, Dr. Mark Hyman. An internationally recognized leader in the field of Functional Medicine, it has been Mark’s mission to educate... Get the full story
